Over the next few weeks, we’re going to be getting to know a few members of staff a little better! First up is Murray Dowie, who has been with us since April 2019. Murray is well known as one of the most relaxed, calming presences among the support workers and is a very popular guy.
Hi Murray, hope you’re having a great day so far! Thanks for letting us get to know you a little bit better!
Tell me about something that matters to you?
Making a difference. Using skills that you have to give the young people, or indeed the older clients, a better outcome. Being able to show them that we’ve been there and understand and can empathise.
Describe yourself in three words.
Considerate. Thoughtful. Kind.
How long have you worked in the Care Sector?
About 7.5 years.
Why do you think you care for other people?
A bad day can always be turned into a good day. I like to do the right thing by other people.
What motivates you to get up in the morning?
I enjoy my job. People rely on us and we need to be there for them.
How do you feel when you manage to help a person you support?
I just feel good. It’s natural to feel good when you’re that kind of person. You build up a good flow with the people you support and get to know their likes and dislikes; it’s like any other relationship.
Where do you think you’ll be in a few years?
Good question; I don’t know.
Tell me about the time you had the biggest impact on a young person?
I’ve started to see a big improvement in my relationship with one of the young people. She took about three months to open up to me and start to develop a relationship. Ultimately it was music – she told me she plays the guitar and I do too. She started to tell me about her frustrations with her flat and I was able to get them sorted out for her. She could see that I was listening to her and appreciated it.
What is so great about working for Step Up?
You know; we’ve got a really good supportive team. You’ve got back up and you’re never stuck.
What do you find exciting about your role?
You don’t know what you’re walking into. I like that.
