Getting to know: Tracey
We continue our‘Getting to know…‘ series with Tracey, who has just joined Step Up!
Q: How long have you worked in the Care Sector?
A: I was working in the care sector for 4 years before leaving to look after my young family for three years.
Q: How did you end up in your line of work?
A: I went to college in 2011 to do my HNC in Social Care with hopes of going on to get a degree to become a Social Worker. However I found a love of caring for others in a hand on way and found working in a supporting role suited me better.
Q: What made you want to join the Step Up team?
A: I believe what Step Up does is fantastic and didn’t even realise that such services existed for young adults in this area so it was a fantastic find for myself. I have always wanted to work with young adults and am excited for the new lessons and opportunity to grow as a person who provides support to others who need it.
Q: What’s been your biggest learning experience in your new role?
A: I haven’t had a chance to get out and meet the young people yet, I would say so far the biggest learning experience has been how the support young people need differs from that of the elderly as this is the type of care and support I am used to giving.
Q: Could you tell us a little about how you’ve adapted your role in line with social distancing measures and how this has affected your work?
A: Working more to communicate through technology instead of face to face has got to be the biggest adaptation I have had to make in my new position. Support work, ordinarily, would be a bit more hands on and face to face but because of the current circumstances I am having to rely more on video chats and phone calls as a form of good communication.
Q: What have you enjoyed most about working with Step Up so far?
A: The induction process, given the current COVID19 circumstances, has been very thorough and helpful. The staff I have interacted with have all been very open and welcoming which really helped to settle any new person anxiety I had. I’ve really enjoyed the process so far.
Q: What do you like most about your role?
A: My main motivation has always been to be helpful to others. I have 3 younger siblings and adopted a caring role for all of them from a young age and have carried that on into my professional choices. Watching people achieve goals they have set for themselves is a highly rewarding experience and if I can be a tiny part of that experience then that’s amazing to me.
